Soracom Automotive Suite Enhances Connectivity for Connected Vehicles
The Soracom Automotive Suite introduces an integrated platform for managing multicarrier connectivity, IoT eSIM profile switching, in-car Wi-Fi management, and usage-based billing for connected vehicles. By consolidating these functionalities into a single API-driven interface, it addresses critical challenges in the automotive sector.
Vehicle connectivity is a long-term commitment, as cars often remain on the road for over a decade. During this period, networks, regulations, and business arrangements continue to evolve, creating a challenge for manufacturers. The connectivity profile established during production may no longer align with the vehicle’s needs years later, particularly if it relocates to a different country or requires a different mix of services.
To tackle this challenge, Soracom has launched the Automotive Suite, designed to oversee connected vehicle connectivity across various functions such as telematics, infotainment, and safety-related voice services, including automatic emergency calling in Europe. This suite is now available and can be accessed via the Soracom API.
What distinguishes this announcement from previous ones is its focus on managing vehicle connectivity post-production, rather than launching a new vehicle module or signing carrier agreements. Soracom aims to position the suite as a crucial control layer for ongoing connectivity, addressing the differing needs of vehicles once they’re on the road. This approach is vital in automotive IoT, where the emphasis shifts from initial activation to ensuring sustained commercial and technical viability throughout the vehicle’s lifecycle.
At its core is the Soracom Connectivity Hypervisor, which leverages GSMA SGP.32 remote provisioning to facilitate the downloading, adding, and switching of operator profiles over the air on a single IoT eSIM. This allows vehicles to initially activate on a Soracom profile and later transition to a local or use-case-specific carrier profile as needs and regulations change, with a fallback option to the Soracom profile built in.
This innovative approach sets the suite apart from traditional roaming models. Instead of treating cross-border connectivity as a static arrangement, Soracom emphasizes the orchestration of profiles post-deployment. Its mobile core connects to over 500 carriers across more than 200 countries and territories, simplifying management through a single interface for Soracom and third-party carrier lines.
The practical implications of this framework allow automakers to view connectivity as an adjustable operational parameter rather than a fixed vehicle attribute. While it does not eliminate the necessity for validating carrier performance and regulatory compliance in various markets, it offers a streamlined mechanism for altering connectivity without the need to physically replace SIM cards or juggle multiple operational processes.
Additionally, Soracom is integrating commercial management features into the automotive suite. It encompasses Soracom In-Car Wi-Fi for enhancing user experience, Soracom Consumer Billing for managing downstream charges to end-users, and Soracom Split Billing, which distinguishes connectivity costs based on usage types. This split-billing capability employs multiple Access Point Names (APNs) and traffic analysis to categorize data flows between OEM telematics, operator services, and user infotainment.
Significance for the IoT Ecosystem
The suite provides original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with a centralized platform to enforce connectivity policies across various markets and vehicle functions through APIs. For tier-one suppliers and system integrators, it introduces an important management layer to consider alongside embedded connectivity hardware and backend vehicle platforms. Connectivity providers may find their roles evolving into selectable operator profiles within a broader orchestration framework, rather than being the sole interface that automakers rely on.
This development is significant within the context of connected mobility’s evolution. Automotive IoT is progressing from basic vehicle data transfers toward a more complex mix of regulated services, consumer connectivity, and operational fleet intelligence. A platform that combines SGP.32-driven profile management with billing differentiation encapsulates this transition; the connectivity architecture is becoming both a technical necessity and a commercial control point.
Furthermore, Soracom Enterprise Support, which offers round-the-clock incident response for global operations, is also included in the suite. This support coverage is crucial, as connectivity disruptions may affect multiple service domains, from diagnostics to user connectivity. Ultimately, the effectiveness of this offering will depend on how automakers and suppliers incorporate these features into their vehicle programs.
