BYD Partners with Intelematics to Enhance Vehicle Safety in Australia
BYD, a leading manufacturer of new energy vehicles, has announced a collaboration with Intelematics, an advanced connected vehicle technology provider, to implement enhanced eCall capabilities for Australian drivers. This partnership integrates Intelematics’ connected car platform, which facilitates features such as Automatic Collision Notification (ACN) and SOS button functionalities, into the newly launched BYD Sealion 8. This innovative technology will also be progressively adopted across future BYD models.
Intelematics’ platform combines sophisticated in-vehicle technology and round-the-clock human support to improve the safety of drivers and passengers in the event of an accident. By automatically transmitting crucial crash data, the system ensures that emergency services can respond more swiftly and effectively, with a clearer understanding of the severity of the incident.
This collaboration will significantly enhance the potential for new BYD models to adhere to the Australian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) 2026 ‘post-crash’ safety requirements, which encourage vehicles vying for a five-star safety rating to include an eCall system.
Exceeding the basic requirements set by ANCAP—which mandates the transmission of the vehicle’s GPS location and provision of voice assistance—BYD’s eCall system aims to provide richer crash data that includes information on:
- Airbag deployment and location
- Number of occupants
- Impact zones on the vehicle
- Vehicle speed and direction at the time of the crash
Stephen Collins, Chief Operating Officer at BYD, emphasized the importance of this partnership in enhancing customer experience. He noted that integrating advanced eCall technology is a critical step in fulfilling their commitment to Australian drivers, bolstering customer trust and reinforcing BYD’s reputation for innovation.
Rob Finney, General Manager at Intelematics, stated that the partnership effectively combines their advanced eCall technology with 24/7 human support through a platform designed specifically for Australian and New Zealand conditions. He highlighted that the provision of comprehensive crash data—from airbag deployment to occupant count—empowers emergency services with precise information, facilitating timely assistance for BYD drivers in Australia.
Intelematics currently supports over 950,000 connected vehicles in Australia, collaborating with major automotive brands, including Toyota, Lexus, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, and Genesis. Through its locally operated platform, Intelematics delivers connected vehicle services and safety technologies, ensuring that automotive partners can offer reliable support to drivers in both Australia and New Zealand.
